The wide pitch of the wave edge is for crusty bread. It cuts through bread very smoothly. The narrow pitch of the wave edge enables you to cut soft bread easily without crushing the bread shape. And the straight edge at the blade tip is handy when you want to cut the bread edge at the last slice.
